Understanding Equity, Inclusion and Cultural Differences: Enhancing the Patient Experience

This course is designed to deliver a basic understanding of the diverse populations we serve and review steps providers may take to enhance the patient experience. Each session will provide participants with general definitions of diversity, inclusion, equity and cultural effectiveness and will use case studies to explore the impact these concepts have on patient/provider relationships and communications.

Course Objectives:

  • Provide a better understanding of diversity, inclusion, equity and cultural effectiveness and their impact on the patient experience.
  • Explain how an individual’s background may affect the way he or she provides and/or receives care.
  • Teach participants how to ask questions about a patient’s cultural context that may result in better care, increased safety and higher satisfaction overall.
  • Enable participants to share information of System-wide policies and resources relative to diversity and inclusion.

Everyday Bias for the Health Professions

This course is designed to offer participants an understanding of unconscious bias – attitudes and stereotypes that affect an individual’s actions and decisions in an unconscious manner. Each session, through a series of exercises and case studies, explores how bias can compromise healthcare delivery and teaches participants how to identify, confront, and mitigate the impact of bias on everyday decisions.

Course Objectives:

  • Understand the science and research of unconscious bias.
  • Identify how bias and the processes of the conscious mind can impact critical healthcare decisions and results – including administrative duties and employment practices, direct patient care and teamwork with colleagues.
  • Increase awareness of participants’ backgrounds and its impact on perceptions.
  • Apply new strategies for practicing more conscious awareness individually and organizationally.

Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual and Transgender (LGBT) Educational Sessions

The Mount Sinai Health System is recognized as a national leader in promoting affirmative and competent health care for lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender patients. To ensure we can continue to provide LGBT patients with the highest quality of care and meet the training requirements for renewal of each facility’s Leadership Status on the Human Rights Campaign Foundation’s LGBT Health Equality Index, all Mount Sinai Health System employees now have access to a variety of in-person and free online curricula.

ODI offers in-person educational sessions and sponsors grand rounds in best practices in LGBT competent healthcare. Sessions include “Creating a Welcoming Environment for LGBT Patients,” “Enhancing the Transgender Patient Experience,” and a variety of clinically-focused trainings to address the special needs of LGB and transgender patients.

The online educational sessions are available in two places: through the Center for Affiliated Learning (the CAL) and through the National LGBT Health Education Center at the Fenway Institute.
